My name is Nicky. Thank you for visiting my site.
I grew up in England and emigrated to New Zealand when I was 30 and expecting my first child. Over twenty years of family-orientated life followed.
Travelling, walking and reading are my three life long loves so when my children took off to various corners of the world, I decided it was time to indulge myself and follow suit. My decades long marriage had ended, I wasn’t enjoying work and my health was suffering. I resigned from my job as a trainer for a library software company, rented out my house, donned a backpack and took off.
My personal challenge was to travel in a country, on my own, where I couldn’t speak the language. Not one but several countries and three years later, I returned home!
There was little or no forward planning. I went wherever the inclination or circumstances (more often) took me. Sometimes it was dictated by my sick father in England; other times, by the location of my children. I house sat when I needed a rest and wanted to stay in one place for a while.
It was a period of major change for me. I had never travelled solo and was very naive. Learning to be on my own, make my own decisions and be self reliant was very difficult at the beginning. (Thankfully, when I broke all the travel rules and encountered a man with a knife in Colombia, who stole my bag containing debit and credit cards, my ex husband still came to my rescue!)
When I left N.Z. I was emotionally and physically drained and life had no purpose. What a difference three years, a lot of travel and a long walk on the Camino made!
I have now bought a house in a peaceful village on the edge of Lake Taupo where I walk every day. I have also taken up yoga. Meditation is still elusive! My book shelves are groaning with books, yet I can’t resist the allure of the book sections in the charity shops.
In the last few years, I have become interested in alternative healing and a spiritual way of life. I am continuing to explore these avenues.
Travelling has not stopped and there are still long trips abroad. It is just not continuous and I have a beautiful base from which to roam.
